A butterfly knife, also known as a balisong, is a folding pocket knife. The blade can be opened by a flick of the knife handle at the end opposite to the blade edge. Butterfly knives are often used for close combat and self-defense, particularly by martial arts practitioners or those with experience in flipping them. The earliest known patent for a balisong was filed by Herman Krieger of Illinois on 29 June 1919. The date of the patent suggests he wasn’t the inventor but was rather building upon what others had already done. This patent was for a knife with two blades, one to open the other, both held in place by a common button. The button is called a "rocker" and appears on several later patents and designs. The blade can be released by pulling it out of the handle. The release of the blade, which has a different angle near the tip, is called an "in-opening" or "in-spring." This is because the release is similar to pressing a spring button on a firearm. A variant on this design keeps one blade free and allows for two different openings, one by pulling the button and another by flicking the knife with your thumb. This design is called an "out-opening" or "outspring''. The first recorded use of the term "butterfly knife" among collectors is in 1971, however it was commonly referred to as a "fan knife" years before. Around the same time, the idea of folding the handles into the blade itself instead of holding them together with a single button or latch began to take hold. This allows for a stronger spring that holds the blade better. The handles are usually held together with two opposing pins called "spikes". Properties Of Butterfly Knife The butterfly knife or balisong, sometimes colloquially known as a butterfly, is a combination of folding knife and wrist-guard. The Balisong is a sharpening twister and has a carbon steel blade with a black or brown handle. It has two handles connected by a hinge at the top, each holding one side of the blade in its own handle. The extra handles provide an extension for protection when fighting with one arm tied behind oneself's back or to block an attack while blocking with the other hand. It was invented during the late 18th century in Manila after Spain colonized the Philippines. Use of the butterfly knife can also be employed as a method of murder as there are no laws regarding the ownership or carrying of either type of knife in most countries. In recent years, law enforcement has taken an interest in the use of butterfly knives as weapons used in murder crime scenes. Legality And Usability The butterfly knife is available in a long and short version, but the "balisong" knife is very rare. The balisong was conceived as a weapon to be used primarily against enemies in close combat, but also as a tool for other purposes such as opening boxes or opening scissors. Although such utility can't be denied, it is generally agreed that the balisong is primarily designed to be used as a means of defense. The term "balisong" is a local Tagalog word referring to the butterfly knife. This is because the knife has two small handles, which are connected at their upper extremities. Arms of Filipino soldiers use balisongs in close combat. The balisong was also used by United States soldiers during World War II when Filipino tribal fighters fought alongside American soldiers against Japanese forces in the Philippines. The butterfly knife can be used to defend you or someone else from a real threat if you need to. This is why it's important to get proper training for any weapon, and not just rely on what your parents tell you about weapons. By educating yourself, you're more likely to keep yourself safe when using weapons in dangerous situations. You should never use a weapon in the wrong way, but rather only use them in the right situations. Measures To Take To Prevent Accidents The butterfly knife is a potentially dangerous weapon because it's easy to accidentally stab someone with it. It needs to be kept under lock and key so no one else can use it without the owner's permission. In order to keep from stabbing someone, or being stabbed by mistake, you should always carry your butterfly knife in a sheath which covers the blade. Never try to play around with your knife, as it's a dangerous weapon. Only use the knife as an emergency tool, and try to avoid stabbing yourself or others with it, as you may accidentally cut yourself. It is illegal in most places of the world to carry such a weapon unless you have a permit allowing you to carry one. If you're caught carrying one without the proper permit, you may be fined and/or arrested.
